Morning Bioengineering |
Afternoon Biomaterial Tinkering |
The morning activities are introductions to bioengineering practices, ethics and frameworks.
|
The afternoon activities focus on hands-on biomaterial creative design explorations. The emphasis is on easy access biofabrication organisms, tools, and processes that may be adapted to public workshops.
|
Day 1 Introductions & Framing the JourneyEngineering WITH Biology
Concepts and Engineering practices Design, engineering, and social justice. Designing with locally source substrates. Exploring 3D printing & vacuum forming to create molds for an array of mycelium growths. |
Day 2 Engineering for Biology & PrototypingEngineering FOR Biology (Including discussion of Foldscope , Frugal Science, incubators, and macrofluidics)
Buttons, Band aids, and Textiles: a workshop in biomaterial design applications and prototyping for circular design (Materials explored: bacterial cellulose and bioplastics with agar and chitin) |
Day 3 Engineering of BiologyEngineering OF Biology.
Biomaterial Harvesting and prototyping of biofabricated products ideas. |
Day 4 Brainstorming Community ActivitiesHow to read a scientific paper (a collaborative journey)
Student brainstorming accessible community bioengineering/biomaterial activities that address criteria and constraints of community/museum spaces. Teens start to imagine explorations that start conversations with broader audiences about synthetic biology, biomaterials and circular design. Guest speakers from Tech Interactive. Presentation of workshop concepts to Bioengineering Department |
