2020 Camp Schedule |
BioJam forges deep connections through collaborative learning between Bay Area community members, Stanford undergraduates and graduate students, and middle and high school students from East San Jose, South Monterey County, and East Bay. The program starts with a two-week summer camp where instructors co-learn with teens on the topics of biohacking, speculative design, and restorative justice. Our 2020 camp was conducted remotely (on Zoom) and was based on kits we designed and delivered to campers. These custom “maker” kits contained bioplastics, live mycelium, and circuitry materials (see budget).
After camp ends, the program continues with bi-weekly meetings between teens and Stanford students throughout the academic year where teens design and lead community engagement projects based on what they learned. In 2020-2021, BioJam teens have (1) exhibited their artwork alongside professional artists at the San Jose International Airport, (2) organized and delivered over 1000 face masks to agricultural workers in the Salinas Valley in collaboration with a local non-profit (Xinampa) and the San Francisco Opera costume department, (3) collaborated on an innovative online program (food+bio+tech) with the Tech Interactive science museum in San Jose, and (4) have designed and led a workshop on biomaterials in fashion at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) 2021 conference for STEM faculty and graduate students from around the world.
